Now that the new year has arrived, it is important to make notes of the key Islamic dates in the Hijri calendar. Plan your life around these dates which are based on the lunar calendar. This is the chosen calendar aligned with Allah’s Divine Order. Allah says in the Quran:
“Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve [lunar] months in the register of Allah [from] the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred…” [Quran 9:36]
How to align our lives around the Islamic months?
- Plan your voluntary fasting according to the white days of each Islamic month. (13th, 14th, 15th of each Islamic month)
- Increase acts of worship during the sacred months.
- Refrain from committing sins during the sacred months.
- Align special events in your life (wedding, holidays) with the dates in the Hijri calendar.
The lunar calendar
The current year in Gregorian calendar terms is 2024, whereas the Hijri year is 1445 or 1446. The Islamic calendar has a 12-month lunar cycle that is based on the moon’s sighting. This means that Islamic holidays and events vary every year.
