Learn the Names of Allah

Allah (SWT) has given Himself Names and attributes so that we can know Him, worship Him and Love Him. What is most amazing and beautiful about Allah’s Names is that through them, we can see how our Creator recognizes the needs of His creation. He is Merciful and we are in need of mercy, He is the Forgiving and we are in need of forgiveness.

To know Allah, we must learn more about His names and attributes. By increasing our knowledge of Allah, we can appreciate His power over all things, and become sincere toward Him.

Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

“Whoever knows Allah will inevitably love him. ِAnd when one loves Allah, the clouds of darkness dissipate from him. Grief, anxiety, and sorrow are removed from the heart, and it is [then] filled with joy and happiness.”

“Allah has ninety-nine names and whoever preserves them will enter Paradise.”

[Muslim]

What is it to know the names of Allah?

It means to memorise them, understand their meaning, and act in accordance with the meanings.

Ibn al-Qayyim mentioned three levels of enumerating the names of Allah (Badaa’i’ al-Fawaa’id, 1/164):

Memorise

The first level, to memorize their words and number.

Understand

The second level, to understand their meanings and implications.

Supplicate

The third level, to make du’a (i.e., supplicate) to Allah with them, this encompasses both supplication of worship and supplication of request.
