Why is helping those in need so important in Islam?

In Islam, the act of giving to those in need, especially during times of conflict, holds immense importance as it aligns with the core principles of the faith. Central to this is the concept of charity, known as “zakat” or “sadaqah,” which is considered one of the Five Pillars of Islam. This obligation stems from teachings emphasizing compassion, mercy, and social justice towards all members of society.

During times of conflict, when individuals are most vulnerable, giving generously becomes even more crucial. It reflects the solidarity and brotherhood among believers, fostering a sense of community and support. We view giving as both a religious duty and an opportunity to earn blessings from Allah. By setting an example of kindness and generosity, even in the midst of turmoil, we as Muslims, aim to promote peace and stability while addressing the root causes of suffering.

Thus, the importance of giving to those in need, particularly during times of conflict, underscores the values of compassion, justice, and solidarity that are fundamental to Islam.

“Indeed, those men and women who give in charity and lend to Allah a good loan will have it multiplied for them, and they will have an honourable reward.” 57:18
