Corona Virus – Duas and Guidance

Coping with Coronavirus

In these unprecedented times we can sometimes find ourselves feeling helpless and anxious.

It is in these times that we build emotional and spiritual resilience.

The Prophet ﷺ said, “No fatigue, nor disease, nor sorrow, nor sadness, nor hurt, nor distress befalls a Muslim, even if it were the prick he receives from a thorn, but that Allah expiates some of his sins for that.”

Sahih al-Bukhari

Ask for ‘Afiyah

The Prophet ﷺ said you cannot ask for anything better than ‘Afiyah.

O Allah, I ask You to be saved from any Distress, Grief, Hardship, Harm, and Don’t test me,

Allahumma inni as’aluka al’afiyah

“O Allah, I ask you for Afiyah.”

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْعَافِيَةَ

Have Tawakul

Sickness can bring about a sense of uncertainty and helplessness and it is in these times that we turn to our Lord, for we believe that nothing befalls a person other than that it is through Gods will. We come to appreciate the power in his Lordship and turn to him reminding ourselves that He is the Almighty, the All wise;

‘Say: “Nothing will befall us except what Allah has ordained for us. He is our Protector. In Allah let the believers put their trust.”

(Surah At-Tawbah: 51)

Through tests and trials we are reminded that we are in total need of Allah. We are reminded that we are not in our control over our lives. Tests happen to bring us back closer to Allah, so when a person is hit with a trial we are reminded to say;

‎Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un

إِنَّا لِلّهِ وَإِنَّـا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعون

‎ “Surely we belong to Allah and to Him shall we return” َ

This statement is a reminder that whatever situation we are in we will always go back to Allah, Verily we belong to Allah. We are reminded we are not alone and that we are not in control.

لَا يُكَلِّفُ اللَّهُ نَفْسًا إِلَّا وُسْعَهَا

Allah does not burden any soul with more than it can bear.

(Surah Bakarah: 286)

Reflect and refocus

With all the fear around the Coronavirus outbreak, we can feel panicked and anxious, like our life is spiralling out of control. An infographic by the Yaqeen Institute helps us reflect and refocus our thinking.

We have been advised to strengthen our faith in these difficult times and to increase our prayers and supplications to Allah swt on top of taking preventative measures such as washing hands regularly and practicing social distancing to help contain this situation.

Two verses that will suffice anyone!

‘Aamanar-Rasoolu bimaa ‘unzila ilaihi mir-Rabbihi walmu’minoon, kullun ‘aamana billaahi wa malaa’ikatihi wa Kutubihi wa Rusulihi, laa nufarriqu bayna ‘ahadim-mir-Rusulihi, wa qaaloo sami’naa wa ‘ata’naa ghufraanaka Rabbanaa wa ‘ilaykal-maseer. Laa yukallifullaahu nafsan ‘illaa wus’ahaa, lahaa maa kasabat wa ‘alayhaa mak-tasabat, Rabbanaa laa tu’aakhithnaa ‘in naseenaa ‘aw ‘akhta’naa, Rabbanaa wa laa tahmil ‘alaynaa ‘isran kamaa hamaltahu ‘alal-latheena min qablinaa, Rabbanaa wa laa tuhammilnaa maa laa taaqata lanaa bihi, wa’fu ‘annaa, waghfir lanaa warhamnaa, ‘Anta Mawlaanaa fansurnaa ‘alal-qawmil-kaafireen.

“The Messenger believes in what has been sent down to him from his Lord, and so do the believers. Each one believes in Allah, His Angels, His Books, and His Messengers. They say: “We make no distinction between any of His Messengers,” and they say: “We hear, and we obey. (We seek) Your Forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the return.” Allah burdens not a person beyond what he can bear. He gets the reward for that (good) which he has earned, and he is punished for that (evil) which he has earned. Our Lord! Punish us not if we forget or fall into error. Our Lord! Lay not on us a burden like that which You did lay on those before us. Our Lord! Put not on us a burden greater than we have strength to bear. Pardon us and grant us forgiveness. Have mercy on us. You are our Protector, and help us against the disbelieving people.”

(Surah Bakarah: 285 – 286)

The Prophet ﷺ said “Recite Surah Al-Ikhlas and Al-Mu’awwidhatain (Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas) three times at dawn and dusk. It will suffice you in all respects.”

(Sunan Abi Daud)

These are difficult times, but we must remember that Allah is always with us and wanting the best for us. We find solace in His presence.

We ask Allah to grant us patience, to strengthen our reliance on Him, and to increase us in our faith and good deeds. Ameen
