Recommit to Allah

Recommit to Allah

The Beginning of a new year

Muharram marks the beginning of the Islamic year. We can use this beginning point to recommit to Allah swt. Make Him essential in our lives for there is nothing without Allah.

Allah says about the sacred months:

“Indeed, the number of months ordained by Allah is twelve—in Allah’s Record since the day He created the heavens and the earth” (9:36)

It is in our essential nature, our fitra, to incline towards His worship. Al-Ghazali tells us that if we comes to know ourself, we know our Lord.

O seeker, you will never be able to establish the commands of Allah Almighty unless you are mindful of your heart, your limbs, your every moment, and your every breath. Source: Bidāyat al-Hidāyah 1/28

When we are aware of our own thoughts and tendencies, our bad habits and flaws we come to know where we need to improve- take stock of ourselves. Then we can set goals on improving our relationship with Allah.

How can we recommit to Allah?

We do so by starting with the right intentions. Intentions are the roots of every action.

The Prophet (Pbuh) said:

"Actions are (judged) by intentions (niyyah), so each man will receive what he has intended for.” [Bukhari & Muslim].

The heart is where intentions are formed and a sound heart leads to sound intentions.

The Prophet (Pbuh) tells us:

“…in the body there is a piece of flesh; if it is sound, the whole body is sound, and if it is corrupt the whole body is corrupt. Truly, it is the heart.” (Sahih Bukhari).

One of the ways to keep our hearts directed to Allah swt is to recite a supplication that was practised by the Prophet (Pbuh)

‘O Allah! The controller of the hearts, direct our hearts to Your obedience.’

Have multiple intentions

The sahabah and scholars would carry out a single action for which they would have many intentions, so that they could be rewarded abundantly for every intention.

With our goal to recommit to Allah. What intentions can you list?

Start today

Get to know Allah. Tell yourself everyday with certainty ‘Allah is with me’ nothing is bigger than Allah as everything in this world is a creation of Allah.

Make dua

“Supplication is the essence of worship.” Then, the Prophet recited the verse, “Your Lord says: Call upon Me and I will respond to you. Verily, those who disdain My worship will enter Hell in humiliation.” (40:60)

May Allah keep our intentions pure and allow us to recommit to Him in a way that is pleasing to Him. Ameen
